Islam is a monotheistic religion centered on the belief in one God (Allah) and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. It is the world’s second-largest religion, with over two billion followers globally. The word “Islam” translates to “submission to the will of God”, and its adherents are known as Muslims.
The fundamental framework of Islam is structured into its history, core articles of faith, and obligatory daily practices. 1. History and Origins
Islam originated in the early 7th century CE in the Arabian Peninsula.
The Prophet Muhammad: Born in Mecca around 570 CE, Muhammad received his first divine revelation in 610 CE through the Angel Gabriel. These revelations continued throughout his life and were compiled into the Quran, the holy book of Islam.
The Hijra (622 CE): Facing intense persecution from polytheistic tribes in Mecca, Muhammad and his followers migrated to the city of Medina. This migration, called the Hijra, marks year one of the Islamic lunar calendar.
Consolidation and Spread: Muhammad established a unified community (Ummah) in Medina. He later peacefully reentered Mecca in 630 CE, cleansing the Kaaba (the sacred cubical building) of pagan idols. By his death in 632 CE, Islam had spread across the Arabian Peninsula. Major Sects and Divisions
Following Muhammad’s death, a disagreement over who should lead the Muslim community led to the primary split in Islam:
Sunni Muslims: The majority branch (roughly 85-90%). They believed the community should elect its leader based on capability, starting with Abu Bakr, a close companion of the Prophet.
Shia Muslims: They believed leadership should remain within the Prophet’s family, designating his cousin and son-in-law, Ali ibn Abi Talib, as the rightful successor.
Sufism: A mystical branch found within both Sunni and Shia traditions that focuses on internal, emotional spiritual experiences and a personal closeness to God. 2. Core Beliefs (The Six Articles of Faith)
To understand Islamic theology, one must look at the Six Pillars of Iman (Faith). These are the mandatory beliefs required of every Muslim: Understanding Islam – A Step by Step Beginner’s Guide
